Liposomes are spherically shaped vesicles that are created from lipids . They have been used to encapsulate drugs and nutrients to promote intestinal absorption, delivery, and bioavailability . When nutrients are encapsulated with liposomes they provide a protective barrier around them which increases their resistance to digestive enzymes, acidity,  and oxidation . This also helps protect the nutrient in the digestive tract to avoid potential irritation by the nutrient, and thus improves delivery and bioavailability to the target body tissues. Liposomal encapsulation helps protect the nutrient from deterioration and can also help target delivery to the target gland, tissue, or system where it can be utilized. The results of the clinical studies of liposomal vitamin C by oral delivery were shown to provide Vit C 1.77 times more bioavailable than non-liposomal vitamin C.

Ingestion of a liposomal Multivitamin affects the concentrations of some vitamins and minerals appearing in the blood, and may slow elimination from the blood compared to a non-liposomal supplement. These findings are important because they demonstrate that coating a supplement with liposomes can enhance bioavailability.  Further research is needed to measure the impact of coating a  supplement with liposomes on tissue uptake, metabolic function, and health.

Hypertension is one of the greatest world’s most significant health problems because of its long-term effect of end-organ damage to many organs. The complications of uncontrolled hypertension are functional and structural vascular abnormalities.

Because the development of hypertension has been in part attributed to oxidative stress, antioxidants, such as vitamin C, have been studied for their  antihypertensive effects.   There are many effective blood pressure lowering treatments currently available, however, despite that hypertension still remains a crucial cardiovascular risk factor for millions. There are a number  drug classes shown to be effective  including diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, beta blockers, and calcium channel blockers. Each type has different potential side effects that may accompany the desired effect achieved for blood pressure modification. As side effects are always a potential accompanying trait of medication the possibility of safe nutraceutical intervention can be of great benefit while lowering the risk of side effects. It has also been shown in published research studies that natural antioxidant substances, such as vitamin C , vitamin E,  and herbal flavonoids such as resveratrol  ,  have a significant effect on hypertension and blood pressure readings.

The vascular endothelial lining modulates vascular tone and structure by producing a number of vasorelaxant agents such as nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandins (PG), and other endothelium-derived factors. Vasorelaxing factors may effectively protect vessel walls from extra loaded-pressure and balance the effects of potent endogenous and/or exogenous contracting factors.  High blood pressure is associated with an imbalance between endothelial relaxing and contracting factors, leading to less production or availability of Nitric oxide and thus, less antagonism of contracting factors.  Research has shown that hypertension is associated with impaired endothelial-dependent relaxation due to the acetylcholine (Ach) and enhanced vascular contraction response to the contracting agents such as phenylephrine (PE).  ,  Also,  clinical as well as experimental hypertension is associated with increased markers of oxidative stress.  – 

Vitamin C is a micronutrient with antioxidant properties. Introduced to scientific literature in 1946 was the hypothesis of the antihypertensive activity of vitamin C .   This was followed by both clinical and experimental studies.  ,  This science indicates that there is a role for vitamin C in maintaining normal blood pressure, and potentially reversing vascular abnormalities via the normal production and biological activity of endothelium-derived Nitric oxide.

“Dietary vitamin C supplementation lowers blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats”

This study considers that Vitamin C, as an antioxidant additive in both nutraceutical pharmaceutical and food products is susceptible to environmental conditions. Therefore design strategies are needed to enhance its stability. The aim of this study is to prepare vitamin C proliposome- “this study results suggest that the vitamin C-encapsulated proliposome powder might be an appropriate carrier for oral drug delivery of vitamin C with better antioxidant efficacy.”

Liposomal  delivery systems for both nutraceuticals as well as pharmacological formulations  is an established technology system and has been shown to have several advantages. Thus  it has obtained wide clinical acceptance. These preparations have some typical pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetic properties such as improvement in drug efficacy and therapeutic index, increased drug stability, reduced drug exposure to sensitive tissue, and a significant reduction in some deleterious adverse effects. These properties taken together are responsible for its greater clinical acceptance and application.   Research has shown that  liposomal forms lead to higher plasma levels and circulating time compared to standard formulations.
