Magnesium has been called the magnificent mineral for good reasons. Nutritional research over the years has proven the importance of maintaining healthy magnesium levels for good health and disease prevention. This month two independently researched and reported studies appeared in scientific journals adding to the evidence of magnesium’s health giving properties.
In the Journal Archives of Medical Research, Magnesium supplementation was shown to decrease C-reactive Protein levels in people with Prediabetes. C reactive Protein is an important and widely used blood test as marker of cardiovascular risk. Yet another study appearing in May 2014 was from The Research Group on Diabetes, Durango, Mexico. It showed multiple heart friendly effects of magnesium. They reported improvement of the Metabolic Profile of prediabetic patients given magnesium. Making up the medical profile were the following measurements, all of which showed improvement: 1. lowering of both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. 2.decreasing glucose levels 3. Decreasing triglyceride levels. Between these two studies four very important predictors of heart health were improved simply by magnesium supplementation.
What everyone needs to know is that it is important to have a doctor or other health care provider check your magnesium level by a Red or White blood cell analysis (not a standard serum blood test) and take the appropriate actions if deficient. Important food sources of magnesium include beans and nuts, whole grains and green leafy vegetables.
