Researchers from the Rothman Institute at Jefferson University presented a study of Platelet Rich Plasma treatment which showed its effectiveness for tennis elbow.
The study examined 230 patients with chronic tennis elbow ( lateral epicondylar tendinopathy). All of them had at least three months of pain and had failed conventional therapy. The pain associated with this condition radiates from the outside of the elbow to the forearm and back of the hand and it can be chronic and severe.
SUCCESS of the Treatment – At 12 weeks, the PRP patients reported 55 percent improvement in their pain scores. At 24 weeks, the PRP patients reported 71 percent improvement. No significant complications occurred in either group.
The study is yet another showing Platelet Rich Plasma to be safe and efficacious for a number of disorders. Platelets are the cells we have in our blood that go to an area of injury, and release a number of growth and healing factors that are essential to the process of healing an area of injury. The science behind PRP treatments, is that by concentrating the platelets, and injecting them with their healing and growth factors back into the body, we can treat a variety of conditions. Cutting edge PRP treatments, still not universally accepted, has been used for years by many world class teams and their athletes for healing joint and tendon problems. This study help to confirm PRP’s effectiveness and safety.
