High Protein Diets Lead to Lower Blood Pressure

According to just published research from Boston University’s School of Medicine, people who eat a high-protein diet may be lowering their risk for developing hypertension (high blood pressure).
One third of adults in the United States have high blood pressure and it is the most important risk factor for the occurrence of heart disease . It is important to note that a majority of those with hypertension are overweight or obese, and higher protein diets are the most effective means to achieve weight loss, which by lowering body weight lowers the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease.

In the study published in The American Journal of hypertension it was found that those study subjects who consumed 100 g protein/day clearly lowered their risk of having high blood pressure compared to those consuming the lowest amounts.Their measurements were done after 4 years of the study, which compared dietary protein intakes of the subjects. They found that the risk of developing high blood pressure was 40 % to 60% lower for the high protein eaters.Lynn Moore M.D. Associate Professor of Medicine at Boston University’s School of Medicine says,”This growing body of research on the vascular benefits of protein, including this study, suggest we need to revisit optimal protein intake for optimal heart health.”
