Eating almonds reduces the risk of heart disease, according to new research from Aston University in Birmingham, England.
The study found that almonds improve the health of the blood vessels by reducing blood pressure, improving blood flow, and by providing the extra antioxidants released into the blood stream. This information ads to the scientific basis for the many studies which have shown that the “Mediterranean diet” which includes plentiful intake of nuts, helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The research tested the effects of an almond-enriched diet on healthy men, as well as on a group of men with heart disease risk factors such as having high blood pressure.
Helen Griffiths , lead researcher said, “Our study confirms that almonds are a superfood. Previous studies have shown that they keep your heart healthy, but our research proves that it isn’t too late to introduce them into your diet — adding even a handful (around 50g) every day for a short period can help. You could replace a daytime snack with a bag of almonds or add them to your regular meals.”
