Research published in the European Journal of Integrative Medicine from the University of York in the UK, shows that acupuncture helps people who experience dental anxiety. Professor of Acupuncture, Hugh MacPherson says, “There is increasing scientific interest in the effectiveness of acupuncture either as a standalone treatment or as an accompanying treatment to more traditional medications. We have recently shown, for example, that acupuncture treatment can boost the effectiveness of standard medical care in chronic pain and depression.”
It has been reported that up to 30% of adults experience anxiety related to having a dental visit, resulting in difficulty breathing , dizziness, and nausea among other symptoms. This research reviewed a number of studies, and their results were combined to reach their conclusions. This method is called meta analysis, where many studies are considered together and their results combined for the analysis. The studies they reviewed compared the anxiety levels of dental patients who received acupuncture with those who did not. They showed a clinically significant difference with a reduction in anxiety levels for those who had received acupuncture with their dental care.
