On this eighth day of our daily countdown please see #3 of my TOP 10 research articles of the year.

Today’s pick is about the importance of Vitamin D.

More and more studies continue to be published adding more proof that preventing vitamin D deficiency may be lifesaving . Having your vitamin D level checked , and doing something about it is  a simple and inexpensive way to enhance your health and possibly ward off disease. In that regard it is my hope that some reader(s) of my top 10 Research Articles of 2014 will take any of  the information to heart and it  can inspire  them to enjoy better health in their lives. The Evidence Mounts for Vitamin D in Cancer, Heart Disease and Other Conditions.

A survey of nutritional research during  all of 2014 reveals that there have been numerous positive studies regarding Vitamin D and its  role in preventing illness and death in many of the most important diseases in our society, including heart disease, and cancer. Published in the June issue of the British Medical Journal was a  review of eight European and American research studies which produced as its headline,  Vitamin D deficiency is linked to higher risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer deaths .

More than 26 thousand men and women between  50 and 79 years of age were  studied over many years. Nearly 6,700 study participants died during the studies, including 2,600+ from cardiovascular diseases and 2,200+ from cancer. They compared vitamin D levels and found that those with the lowest concentrations of Vitamin D had a nearly double the risk of overall death as those with high concentrations.

Just recently another research study  regarding vitamin D and cancer survival was published in the  Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. It showed that cancer patients who have higher levels of vitamin D when they were diagnosed tend to have better survival rates and remain in remission longer than patients who were vitamin D-deficient. They analyzed 25 separate studies that measured vitamin D levels in cancer patients at the time of diagnosis and tracked survival rates. They found the strongest link between vitamin D levels and survival in breast cancer, lymphoma and colorectal cancer.

Finally, another study was published in the  Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism which investigates a  possible  underlying reason cardiovascular disease, cancer and others may all be linked to vitamin D deficiency. The  study of nearly 1,000 Irish adults examined vitamin D levels as well as biomarkers of inflammation. Participants who were vitamin D deficient were more likely to have high levels of these biomarkers, which are linked to cardiovascular disease and many other inflammatory conditions such rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.

This blog post follows up on my previous post of May 19th, 2014, Vitamin D Is Vital To Your Health. Vitamin D seems to be the darling of nutritional researchers so far in 2014. Everyone should have their Vitamin D level checked and act upon the findings. Foods containing Vitamin D include eggs, milk products, fish and liver.
