They published another overview of its potential preventative health benefits

Studies have shown that pomegranate may play a role in prevention of so many disease:

  • Heart and circulatory disease– likely due to its antioxidant properties
  • Gastrointestinal system – inflammatory bowel disease
  • Diabetes– Insulin resistance – lowers blood glucose readings
  • Central nervous system – ischemic stroke, and
  • Reproductive system – heavy menstrual bleeding, and nausea and vomiting during pregnancy
  • Rheumatic disorders – Rheumatoid and osteoarthritis
  • Dermatologic disorders – Ultraviolet-induced pigmentation
  • Periodontitis and gingivitis – related to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities.

Research has also found that pomegranate is beneficial to those who have the following common medical problems

Diabetes

One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial on 40 diabetic patients who suffered a heart attack took pomegranate extract for one month. That reduced both fasting blood glucose readings, and lowered Hgb A1C levels [82].

Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress plays a role in the development of cardiovascular disease. A number of studies have shown  that pomegranate can reduce measures of oxidative stress. In one study, administration of Pomegranate juice to diabetics for 6 weeks reduced oxidized LDL levels. Another study documented its ability to lower lipid peroxides which contributes to the worsening of circulatory problems.

Inflammation

A study of diabetic patients showed that the levels of the inflammatory markers Hs-CRP and IL-6 were lowered by 30% 85 after 4 weeks of pomegranate juice intake.

Lipid Lowering Effects

Juice containing pomegranate and other antioxidant fruits was given to 44 subjects for 4 weeks resulting in a lowering of total cholesterol and LDL levels as well as increasing the “good” cholesterol -HDL.

High Blood Pressure

6 weeks of drinking pomegranate juice resulted in  decreased systolic and diastolic blood pressure in Type 2 diabetics [99].

In traditional Persian medicine Pomegranate juice, whole fruit, seed extract, and  seed oil, have all been used in as anti-hypertensive, cardioprotective , and lipid lowering agents [117].

Lowering of Serum Cortisol

One hour after drinking pomegranate juice, a lowering of the stress hormone cortisol was shown in a study of eight nine diabetic subjects.[103].E

Obesity

Pomegranate ingestion by fifty study subjects for eight weeks lowered insulin resistance, HsCRP, and body weight.

Cancer

Pomegranate exhibits anti-cancer activity inhibiting the proliferation of tumor cells [106].

Coronary Heart Disease

There have been a number of studies which have documented the improvement in a variety of risk factors and markers of coronary nad circulatory disease. After one year of drinking Pomegranate juice for one year a significant  reduction in the thickness of the inner lining of the carotid artery was documented as well as  a lowering of the “bad ” cholesterol-LDL

Oral Cavity – Dental Plaque Gingivitis and Periodontitis

A significant reduction in the signs of chronic periodontitis and IL-1 levels were shown after pomegranate ingestion [172].

Dementia

A new study from the University of Copenhagen concluded that a substance present in pomegranates  may improve memory and possibly help in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease .Vilhelm Bohr, who was a Department Chair at the US National Institute on Aging and is now a Professor at the University of Copenhagen “Our study on mouse models with AD shows that urolithin A, which is a naturally occurring substance in pomegranates, can alleviate memory problems and other consequences of dementia. he explains further that, “many patients with neurodegenerative diseases experience mitochondrial dysfunction, also known as mitophagy. This means that the brain has difficulties removing weak mitochondria, which thus accumulate and affect brain function. If you are able to stimulate the mitophagy process, removing weak mitochondria, you will see some very positive results.”
