High Acid Diet May Have Negative Effects on Kidney Health

A newly  published study from the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology reveals that for patients with chronic kidney disease, diets  that have a high acid content increase the risk of developing kidney failure. Previous studies have shown that  for patients with kidney disease diet significantly influences the degree of progression of mild to a more severe state of  kidney dysfunction.

High acid diets contain more meats and proteins. Low acid load diets are rich in fruits and vegetables

Tanushree Banerjee, PhD of UC San Francisco and her team  analyzed information on nearly 1,500 adults with Chronic Kidney Disease  who participated in a large national sample called the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III. The study data analyzed was a result of a follow up of the  subjects after fourteen years. Participants in the survey who ate high acid diets were three times more likely to develop kidney failure than those who consumed low acid diets.

Lead researcher Dr. Banerjee tells us that  “patients with chronic kidney disease may want to pay more attention to  (lessen) diet consumption of acid rich foods to reduce progression to kidney failure … The high costs and suboptimal quality of life that dialysis treatments bring may be avoided by adopting a more healthy diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables.”
