FDA Alert: Avoid Lupin if You Are Allergic to Peanuts or Soybean

Lupin, an ingredient used in gluten-free products, may be causing allergic reactions in unsuspecting consumers. Lupin is a yellow-colored bean that is widely used in Europe and  Mediterranean countries. In the U.S.  it is  being introduced into gluten free products as a  good source of protein and fiber. However, lupin has the same protein that causes allergic reactions to peanuts and soybeans.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an alert regarding consumers with peanut or soy allergies, to be on the alert  for lupin on the labels of gluten free products . Allergic reactions may manifest in a variety of ways including hives, swelling of the lips, shortness of breath and even anaphylactic shock. Anyone who must avoid peanut or soy  products must be aware of lupin’s potential hazards for them.
